Tinder Swindler, Vaping & Weird History: Issue 14
Hey, just me and my chaotic newsletter again!
Kia ora
Did you have a good Valentines Day? Yeah? Nah? 💖 It’s okay, it’s one of those ‘marketing’ hallmark holidays that I both like and can’t stand at the same time. I mean, I’m not going to pretend I didn’t love the 8 red roses and luxurious body scrub I received but also… I’m not going to be completely miffed if they never arrived in the first place? Don’t tell Logan that.
I brought Logan a custom brownie in a pink box because I wanted to eat brownies this week. Love that for me. He doesn’t read my newsletter so I don’t need to apologise 😊
On with the show, here’s what media I’ve been absorbing this week:
〰️ READING 〰️
I came across this thoughtful guide on using (and writing) Asian names respectfully and thought I would include it in case it helps others too:
I fucking love this article about erotic, short story fiction writer Sam Te Kani so much - what a guy!
If you’re watching Euphoria, then like me… you might have your favourite troublesome characters. I wanted to do a little deep dive into two characters I can’t look away from Fezco, and Faye.
Faye, played by Chloe Cherry, is a heroin user who exudes the utmost confidence. While Fezco ‘Fez’ played by Angus Cloud is a drug dealer and quite a lovely guy who’s trying to protect his harmful business and the people he cares for. I realise how much of an oxymoron that is, but if you’re watching the show you’ll know exactly what I mean. I think these two, while they aren’t two of the MAIN main characters, they’ve done such an outstanding job on the show.

〰️ LISTENING 〰️
I’ve just started The Vaping Fix - which is a podcast series about vaping. Remember when vaping wasn’t even a thing? Then suddenly, it seemed everyone was puffing away on sickly sweet vapours.
I’ve mostly been cranking the tunes as it’s been a busy work week - does anyone else find it hard to listen to podcasts if you’re using the part of your brain that needs to write? I have friends (Hey Lily!) who are designers and illustrators who seem to churn through pods while they’re working. I, on the other hand, tune out of the pod and focus on the writing… it may as well not even be playing because it just disrupts my concentration.
〰️ WATCHING 〰️
Can we please fucking talk about The Tinder Swindler documentary on Netflix because what the actual fuck? I’m one part, “What the hell, why Netflix?” and also one part “This is cooked and I’m so glad I watched it”. I don’t want to give the premise away if you haven’t seen it yet, but please - friends who are on dating apps… for the love of GOD be careful who you’re talking to. I will screen this person if I need to… like, send them my way and I will HELP you to not get scammed.
Onto something a little more light-hearted. I’m obsessed with watching/listening to the Weird History Youtube channel, it’s full of really cool short explainer style videos on well, weird historical shit. They even created a video on The History of the McRib…. My favourite is, of course, Egyptian and Medieval topics, but there’s loads of cool stuff here and it’s a great channel to have on in the background!
Did you watch the Super Bowl? Or just the half-time show like me?! Can we talk about the amazingness of this entire performance? I was reliving my early 2000’s days with 50 Cent, Snoop, Eminem, Mary J Blige and then some Kendrick Lamar. So👏damn👏good! Check out the full performance on Youtube.
I hope you’ve had a fabulous week everyone, and hopefully, this wee Grab A Slice issue gave you something delightful to read. The whole point of this whole thing is documenting the gripping shit I’ve consumed over the past week (some not-so gripping also) and then sharing it with those who might have the same interests.
Love you, chat next week and thanks heaps for subscribing!
