The Met Gala, Gaming & Ethical Fashion: Issue 22
We’ve got The Met Gala discussions, a bit about ethical fashion, gaming, emojis and some music chats this week.
Helloooooo readers,
We’ve got The Met Gala discussions, a bit about ethical fashion, gaming, emojis and some music chats this week. Let’s get into it!
This week I’m watching, reading and listening too…
It’s on everybody’s 👄
The Met Gala happened yesterday and the theme for 2022 was ‘Gilded Glamour White Tie’. Think corsets, bustles, studs, gold-fringed, historical dresses coming out of storage, dripping with gold and excess. On one hand, appropriate… seeing as we’re in the second gilded age ~ that chunk of time between 1870 and 1890. A handful of really rich people, with everyone else in poverty. It’s a bit out of touch but that’s ‘entertainment’ right?
I have mixed feelings about the Met Gala, the cost to attend, the MONEY involved… it all reeks of wealth and overabundance, which isn’t me saying I hate rich people. I don’t, and I enjoy money… I, like many others, am torn between hating on the event, loving it, and thinking it's kind of necessary for the sake of art. I just think there are a few things wrong with the Met Gala.
Finally, and before I get to my faves, Kim… can we take a quick moment, please? I am once again, torn but also truly horrified that her ‘borrowing’ this iconic piece of history was ever allowed. Not only that, but she proudly stated losing weight in a very short amount of time, to fit into it - on live TV. I mean, did we expect anything else from a Kardashian? Now. I’m not one to bring another woman down. I thought Kim looked beautiful. Her blonde slicked back do’, and that beautiful dress… I mean, she has the money and power to do whatever the fuck she wants. But that’s just it. At what point when you’re rich AF do decent values, ethics and I duno… common sense kinda disappear out the window? Is this a monetary value you hit in which your standards and values disappear? SOMEONE HELP ME.
That’s all the air time I’m giving it. On to the good stuff!
✨ Some of the most stylish fits IMO:
Serena Williams in her stylish 3-piece pantsuit - a woman in a suit will always SINK.
Janelle Monáe kills it on every red carpet and I always look forward to her outfit choices. She’s wearing Ralph Lauren, the hood, the matching cuffs… honestly this woman is one of the sexiest, most beautiful people on the planet…
HOW GOOD IS THIS? Emma Corrin is serving in this cute, tomboyish look complete with a top hat and coat. I love it so much. Take out the white tights, and I would wear the shit out of this look.
Quite possibly my favourite look of the evening… Normani, everybody… complete with black velvet low slung dress, oversized hat and her green metallic eyeshadow and blush up to her temples. I couldn’t take my eyes off her.
Michelle Yeoh stood out to me for a more understated classical take on the theme. I am utterly obsessed with green clothing firstly, but this colour on her coupled with her red lip is soooo striking.
OMG Jodie Turner-Smith… I can’t deal. She is SO BEAUTIFUL! Her mini interview with Lala was so cute, it was her first Met (with her husband Joshua Jackson) and she has the cutest British accent. I love her, and this fire fit so damn much.
While we’re on the topic of fashion, I also watched the Abercrombie & Fitch documentary (Netflix) last night. It was very eye-opening, I didn’t know much about the brand, or the complete discrimination experienced by their staff and shoppers. I never actually wore the brand as it kinda hit the spotlight with teens/young adults when I was a bit younger. Pumpkin Patch anyone? Haha.

I’m still following along with the Depp/Heard court case and this Vice article was an interesting read. Warning: it does contain some awful comments between the two of them and might be triggering from a domestic/physical abuse standpoint so please only read it if you’re curious and have the emotional bandwidth.
I've been playing games almost my whole life. I had an Atari, a Sega, a Nintendo, and all my nerdy dreams came true when we got the PS1 around 1995. I have since had almost all the Playstation consoles, and currently have an Xbox, a Nintendo Switch, PS4 and a snazzy gaming computer. Gaming was an escape in my early childhood, and quickly became part of my life - it’s never left! I used to play WoW religiously, so this article spoke to me about the addictions of gaming, but also how playing games might be working FOR you - rather than against you!
This was a REALLY good piece of work by Marielle Elizabeth on the rift between ethical fashion influencers and fast fashion influencers.
I have decided that the broccoli emoji, is quite possibly, the cutest emoji out of them all. That is all 🥦
It’s MAY! This means, a new playlist - curated to my mood and updated almost daily!
Also, I wanted to mention that it’s New Zealand Music Month and give a little shout out to two of my favourite ladies in the NZ music industry - Kendall Elise, and Tami Neilson! I went to one of Kendall’s gigs recently and wrote about my amazing experience.
I’ve chatted about Aaliyah before because I love her, but I recently found the track ‘Poison’ by The Weeknd featuring unreleased lyrics by Aaliyah and it prompted my thinking about the ethics behind releasing posthumous music - also, why do so many guys in the music industry seem to be weirdly still obsessed with her?
FYI! I’m currently writing a fun piece about some of the most memorable, unexpected, awkward and disturbing dance scenes in film and TV. It's coming out soon here on Substack, and it will be paywalled! If you wanna read it, consider becoming a subscriber for as little as $5 a month! That’s like, ONE really good cafe coffee, without alternative milk ☕
Mā te wā (see you later) and please sign up, like, share, comment or subscribe if want to support me a little further. Every little comment and share helps to get this out to others who might enjoy it (and those options are free). Yay!
