Showgirls, Teletubbies & Headspace: Issue 19
I'd forgotten how much I love erotic thrillers from the 90s
Kia ora everyone,
It’s been such a bizarre week for me, I’ve felt a combination of extreme tiredness coupled with random bursts of motivation and energy.
I get to the end of my week and I start piecing this newsletter together and I remember all the media I’ve devoured so I can share the good bits with you.
I realised that I also play a lot of games, so I’m thinking about also adding a ‘what I’m playing’ section. Let me know if that’s something you might be interested in reading as well
This week I’m watching, reading and listening too…
So I rewatched the cult 90s film Showgirls on Thursday night. Based in Las Vegas, and following Nomi Malone - an aspiring showgirl who wants to make it big in the Neon Capital (and at any cost).
I had somehow forgotten that the entire erotic drama is basically about topless women dancing in Vegas. I’ve been re-watching a bunch of 1990’s films at the mo for fashion, nails, makeup, and hair inspiration and if you can fast word through that awful ‘scene’ at the end, the full-frontal nudity as well as an impossibly ridiculous pool sex scene… then it delivers on the 90s aesthetic and incredible costuming. It’s absurd. But awesome.
Here are a few of my favourite looks from the film:
I’m lining up a few more cult classics from the erotic thriller genre so watch this space…
Also, I need a poll - do I, or don’t I give in and start watching Bridgerton? Tell me what to do, please.

P.S. If you can't afford it, that’s okay – I don't want money to be a barrier to entry and this particular newsletter will always be available for free regardless 😊❤️

Did anyone watch Metaverse Fashion Week? Have any of you made an avatar and entered the Metaverse yet? I’m so fascinated when it comes to the future of fashion - from virtual influencers modelling, digital clothing designs and now Metaverse Fashion Week. There was a fashion village, where users could wander around and look at the latest from Tommy Hilfiger - buying pieces with cryptocurrency.
While it doesn’t sound anything like the joys of wandering around an actual event, it was the first one and I’m super keen to see what happens next EVEN if you can’t touch or feel these designs in person.
Next up is MAFS. Now, I know I’m late to the party but… Married at First Sight Australia just finished its latest season and good lord, what a watch it was. I have so many opinions on this show… and the unwholesome behaviour throughout the whole thing. I mean, where do I even begin with Olivia’s deep dive into Domenica’s OnlyFans? I’m blown away by the audacity, the lack of empathy, the lack of self-awareness and the fact that creators who use OnlyFans for income were shamed on national TV as well as a whole bunch of other deeper issues that I don’t have the expertise or even the nerve to comment on. Please do better reality TV… because that was incredibly painful to watch.
If you also remember watching the completely strange show Teletubbies then these behind the scenes stories and extremely fucked up character theories will be a riot for you. Grab a drink, maybe some alcohol? Poor Tinky Winky is all I can say…
I had the most amazing conversation about meditation this week. Does anyone else meditate?
I do very occasionally. When I remember.
But this week a friend and I were discussing how good the meditation app Headspace is, and then I started to explain my favourite Sleepcast which is called ‘Rainday Antiques’ - to which my friend immediately burst out with a euphoric ‘YES’. I genuinely felt so delighted that I had found another human that enjoyed this particular Sleepcast as well. Now, if you don’t know anything about them, then read more about Sleepcasts here. In a nutshell, it’s a bedtime story, that soothes me into the deepest of sleep with the gentle sound of rain, coupled with the voiceover. The story is based in a 24-hour antique store and it’s just SO DAMN RELAXING. Highly recommend downloading the app and giving it a whirl. It’s available on the Headspace app, but you could also listen to the 10 min version for free on Youtube to help wind down in the evening.
April’s public Spotify Playlist is feeling cosy, adding new music throughout the month so go add it to your favourites.
As always, thank you so much for reading!
Bit of a TMI moment but if I’m being honest, I’ve spent a long time worrying about what other people were thinking when it came to my writing. And it wasn’t until recently - in the last year or so that I’ve really been writing freely and just not caring about what it sounded like or what other people would think. As someone who started blogging over 10 years ago, and was obsessed with Myspace and Tumblr, I love that Substack has this space available for writers.
Have an awesome week everyone,
Mā te wā (see you later) and remember to subscribe if want to support me further.
