Secrets of Playboy, Grey Hair & Love-Bombing: Issue 18
I swear to god if I have see another person giving their take on 'The Slap'...
Heeeey you, 👋
How are you? I mean it. HOW are you? I am so tired you guys, like, SO tired. Full body tiredness is a thing today.
This week has been a reallllll fascinating week in the world of pop culture, right? I don’t even need to go into it, and this newsletter refuses to even take part in the online discourse around the incident so in better news…
So I’m literally writing this, very tired, with a face mask on so excuse and fumbling because I’m a little *blergh* today.
This week I’m watching, reading and listening too…
The Secrets of Playboy series… okay, so this was WILD and I have so many things I want to talk about but I don’t want to *spoiler alert* everything so I’ll just pause. There were some seriously hideous things mentioned about what went on at The Playboy Mansion over the years and it was sobering to see how many of those women either A. Aren’t alive to tell their tale or B. Still recovering from trauma and working through it all. Throughout the episodes, there was loads of archival footage from the 70s and ’70s right through to the early 2000s as well as exclusive interviews with ex-Playmates, girlfriends of Hugh Hefner and staff who worked there.
There were literally moments where my jaw was on the ground okay. Sickening things which these women went through so if sexual and emotional abuse is something that triggers you then please keep this in mind before watching.
So I recently watched a movie called Vivarium and if you’re a fan of quirky, sci-fi thriller types then YOU ARE WELCOME. I need to find someone who’s watched it and is willing to discuss it with me because it was amazing. What a film! Also, I can’t stop looking at the clouds this week. IYKYK.
Have you seen that documentary on Netflix called Bad Vegan? It’s another fraudster type series following Sarma Melngailis, who’s the former owner of the New York City vegan restaurant Pure Food and Wine, and her relationship with fraud monster Anthony Strangis.
I was really sad for her throughout the entire 4-part series - it was just disappointing to see this happening again (on TV). I’m deep diving fraudsters right now, and if you read Issue 14 then you’ll remember my thoughts on the Tinder Swindler.

So my newsletter stats tell me two things, that you open it more on weekends, and that you like the succulent, juicy links on really weird shit. The analytics don’t lie my friends…
So, you must have seen all the chit-chat online about ‘The End of the BBL’ (Brazilian Butt Lift). There have been so many different angles about this online for a while now, including TikTok. It’s ugh, an interesting/problematic discussion.
If you follow my shenanigans on social media you’ll know I’m often conversing about fashion/sex/mental health WHILE ALSO being a proficient, female business owner. This sentence may mean nothing to you, but I read an article by local journalist Whilhemina Shrimpton who articulated my thoughts on these things not being mutually exclusive WAY better than I could have done.
Did you know about the term ‘Love bombing’? Because I had never heard of this before until this week and apparently it’s an ‘attempt to influence a person by demonstrations of attention and affection’. It came up quite a bit in a recent podcast I was listening to, but more on that below!
How do we feel about #RoyalCore and #PrincessCore but also #Regencycore? While it’s not my personal style and I don’t watch Bridgerton, I can’t help but love the videos and photos I’m seeing on social media of those expressing themselves.
So remember around Christmas time, I mentioned that I didn’t really listen to the Call Her Daddy podcast, YET I haven’t been able to stop listening to her latest few episodes but it’s because she keeps interviewing really intriguing people who I’m super interested in learning about. So as you know from above, I’ve been watching (and listening) to as much Playboy related media and of course, I found this podcast from a while back featuring Holly Madison. I really like her, and I remember thinking she was SO pretty back in the early 2000s. Anyway, Holly has a very eye-opening chat with Alex Cooper and you can listen at the link above.
It’s no secret, that I have silver hair - it’s natural and wonderful and I love it. So when local gal Petra Bagaust started a podcast called ‘Grey Areas’ I was ecstatic to start listening. She’s chatting with guests who are also sporting grey/silver hair and it’s so damn wholesome I can’t deal.
Music-wise, I went to a live gig this week, Friday night in fact, and it was amazing!
It was so good to be back in a room listening to live music. If you love country/rockabilly music then go read my *shameless plug* review of Kendall Elise’s new album release tour and listen to the album on Spotify below.
That’s it for now, but what the heck at it being April already! This means I need to get started on my April music playlist for the next Issue.
Thanks so much for reading, I hope you enjoyed it and have an amazing week everyone.
Mā te wā (see you later) and remember to subscribe if want to support further.
