Queer as Folk, Meme Life & The World of Sunscreen: Issue 26
I'm super tired, and reading all about burnout this week. Just apologizing beforehand.

Kia ora readers,
As I’m writing this, it’s Saturday morning - the rain is pissing down, and there’s thunder and lightning. It’s wild out there and I hope wherever you’re reading this, the weather is nicer.
I’m extremely tired, I think a few too many late nights have caught up with me lately and I’m 100% feeling it.
📅 This week I’m watching, reading and listening to…
Queer as Folk
I’ve just started watching Queer as Folk (TVNZ) and it’s quickly become one of my favourites. The vibrancy, the energy, the representation, the soundtrack, Devin Way... I’m here for all of it and if you love New Orleans and miss travel as I do - you’re bound to enjoy it! If I can say one thing… if you’re a fan of the original The Craft film with Fairuza Balk, you’ll enjoy the first ep.
BIG *NSFW* sex scene + drugs warning. Watch the trailer »
Keep Sweet - Pray & Obey
I’m always up to watch a doco about a harmful, religious cult. I remember watching all about this story when I was younger while the media was covering the main case. Not giving anything away, but it’s a nice 4-part series that just gets to the points without dragging things on. Nice one Netflix.
Content warning: child sexual abuse, so don’t want it if this might affect you. I’m also putting the overuse of horrible pastel fabric in here as a content warning too. Watch the trailer »
If you aren’t in a place to contribute financially, that’s okay – I don't want money to be a barrier to entry and this particular newsletter will always be available for free regardless 😊 TY! ❤️
The sunscreen industry is dodgy… there I said it. It’s controversial, and a bit racist, just to get my point across. Why do I think this way? Well, a few reasons spring to mind.
The way the formulas are made and ‘who’ is in mind when they’re created.
The cost of most sunscreen (something so important, for everyone, should be so expensive. It should be government-funded. It’s part of healthcare. Fight me.
The scientific jargon used makes ingredients lists hard to understand.
Harmful ingredients which fuck up the ocean life.
Misleading marketing around SPF quantity in makeup.
Also… did you know counterfeit sunscreen is widespread online.
So much to go into, it could be a whole other article - maybe it will! But have a read of the Bustle article above, very intriguing and makes me think: Where there is a need… there is exploitation.
This interview with Don Caldwell, the Editor-in-Chief of Know Your Meme was super fascinating - I spent ALOT of my early twenties on 4Chan and Reddit, and as someone nerdy about social media analytics and social listening I honestly couldn’t think of a cooler place to work… imagine documenting memes culture and finding the source of where it all began. Have you got any jobs going @Don ?
One of my favourite memes of all time is Disaster Girl. Do you have a favourite/most relatable meme?
I haven’t shared any beauty products or looks I’ve been loving recently, BUT I did receive the Chatty Chums email newsletter this week and was reminded to scroll through their awesome content - found this gem of a list about some beauty products used on the set of Euphoria. Spoiler* I am a BIG fan of Skinfood and use it under my makeup in winter for a nourishing, mega hydrating base!
P.S I wrote about dating for Chatty Chums once.

No podcasts or e-book recommendations this week - it’s been more of a ‘music while I’m working week’.
