I'm Charlotte, and I write like I speak. My friends always ask me for recommendations on books, films, and podcasts, so I created Grab a Slice to share my suggestions and help others discover new favourites.
Do you frequently share reccys with someone? If so, why not share this newsletter with them as well?
Hello angels,
I hope everyone’s having a fab-u-laaaas week! It’s been an absolute banger in terms of hot HOT HOT weather and I’m embarrassed to admit how many margaritas and iceblocks I’ve consumed this week, so let’s move on WITH! THE! SHOW!
Lana Del Rey is in the Hollywood limelight again and so is Celine Dion... Now all I need is Enya to make a huge comeback in some Enya-ish way and I’ll be laughing/crying/singing Orinocco Flow till my throat burns.
This newsletter seems to feature many ladies… and that’s a good thing. On with it…
We all know by now, that I go down strange rabbit holes on the internet often, and I get to share my findings here with you. This time, it’s #watertok or ASMR-style TikToks about refilling freezers with different-shaped icecubes. Some people have some seriously boujee icecubes out there… we’re talking, lemon and ginger slices frozen into ice cubes, frozen raspberries, dragonfruit, orange juice, coffee, lemon juice - you name it, it’s being cut up or mixed and thrown into an ice tray. God damn it’s satisfying to watch and while I’m reluctant to share an example because I’m slightly embarrassed, BUT, you know I don’t gatekeep.
I then found this article about a self-proclaimed ‘ice nerd’ and now I’m just reading everything I can find on ice, the history of ice in drinks etc. It’s going to be a future podcast episode on Suspicious or Delicious (shameless plug).
Watch this carpool karaoke with Celine Dion - so good!
I finally sat down and watched the lengthy ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ and wow, what a devastatingly hard watch that was. I felt like I was horrified from start to finish and it was a LONG film. If you’re not yet aware or haven’t seen it here’s the basis “Real love crosses paths with unspeakable betrayal as Mollie Burkhart, a member of the Osage Nation, tries to save her community from a spree of murders fueled by oil and greed.”
The movie's filming style, coupled with the heart-wrenching events that occurred to the Native American community, and the deplorable ways outsiders encroached upon their lives, made for a difficult viewing experience. I truly felt for Mollie, it was difficult watching many parts of this film when she was suffering so deeply.
I suggest taking frequent breaks to use the bathroom and grab drinks and snacks. Nonetheless, I highly recommend it as a historical depiction of the Osage tribe and this bleak chapter of US history.
Currently, I'm reading what feels like 5-6 different books. I know it seems like a lot, but I need a book for whatever mood I'm in. One of the books I'm reading is after I completed 'The Body Keeps the Score', which I shared with you all last year. This current read is titled 'What Happened To You' by Bruce D. Perry and Oprah Winfrey, and it's profound! I’m enjoying the audible e-book version.
I also loved this essay by Freya India which I’ve linked below, and tbh, since reading it, I have indeed taken my life a little more offline, which feels kinda… nice.
As always, it's a new month, which means I have a new custom-made playlist for you. I update it almost daily with whatever songs I'm into that day, week, or month. It's always an eclectic mix because that's how I roll.
Also, I truly dig Pixie Geldof and I wish she would bring out more music. Her album ‘I’m Yours’ didn’t do as well as anticipated when it was released in 2016 and I kinda hate that. Like, I didn’t consent to everyone not enjoying this album as much as me. So, naturally, I’m sharing it here so can go listen to it.
My fave songs are: I’m Yours, So Strong, Woman Go Wild, Rain Comes Down and Close To You.
Go off Pixie.. go off!
Until next time my friends, have a stunning week!
