Our Father, Nepotism Babies & Conversations with Friends: Issue 24
How TF is it almost June already...
Psssst I’m sharing my first paid piece of writing for Grab a Slice Supporters this week - it’s going to be a fun piece that I’ve hinted at for a while on Instagram stories (it’s all about dancing). It’s coming your way soon! Become a Grab a Slice Supporter to have access to my exclusive paid content.
Alrighty! Kia ora everyone,
How are we feeling today/this week? Just making sure you’re doing okay out there. I’m gearing up for a really busy week with THREE trips to Auckland: including a wax, a long lunch at Onslow, dinner with an ex-colleague and PACIFIC FUSION. Can we also just take a moment to talk about the fact, that I’ve been to the gym 5 times this week. That is huge for me. I’ve been feeling so motivated and do you know why? Because I forgot that Les Mills has a SAUNA. Gripping I know.
Anyway. TMI which you probably don’t care about, but guys, saunas during cold weather are doing it for me right now. Right. On to the reason why you’re here.
This week I’m watching, reading and listening too…
I second-guessed whether I should watch Our Father (Netflix) this week, which isn’t like me at all - but I’m trying to be mindful of where my head is at mentally before I dive into the more difficult subjects. Unfortunately, I ended up watching this doco over dinner, which wasn’t the best decision, so please learn from my mistake!
Content warning: Manipulation, sexual abuse
I watched Our Father with my partner Logan - it’s the squeamish true story about a religious fertility doctor based in Indianapolis who artificially inseminated over 60 women without their consent… WITH HIS SPERM. It was a really interesting story, and the only part that kept me watching was the persistent drive of the children. It brought up so many issues for me, not just from an ethical perspective but also from my history of abuse in childhood. Sometimes I honestly wonder why I put myself through watching topics like this and then I remember I’m forever curious to uncover the fuckedupness of the planet and like to learn/absorb whatever I can.
You may have recently seen every Gen Z talking about Sally Rooney’s new book to TV adaptation: Conversations with Friends (Prime Video). Unpopular opinion, but I didn’t enjoy this series as much as thought I would - after the goodness of Normal People, which left me with all sorts of feelings, this show kinda, lacked? I duno, maybe I shouldn’t compare the two, and while I like the dynamic (I have never read her books) it just wasn’t a stand out for me - and that’s okay!
Have you seen it? Did you enjoy it? I’m super keen to talk to someone who can explain to me why they loved it so much.
Also, FYI - I’m rewatching all of Ozark (Netflix). I started watching it years ago when it came out and then kinda stopped halfway through season 3 for no apparent reason. With season 4 recently dropping, I’ve forgotten everything and need to rewatch to catch up. Just over here desperately trying to stay away from every Ozark spoiler.

Do you know what a nepotism baby is? It’s famous children, with famous parents. The whole idea comes from being born into rich, powerful families. Rhianna and A$AP Rocky’s little cutie? A Nepotism baby.
I enjoyed reading this Ensemble list of what’s cool according to Gen Z!
In the lead up to Pacific Fusion happening this coming weekend in Auckland, I HAD to go over everything from Afterpay Australian Fashion Week 2022. What a gorgeous mixture of colour, style, and more diversity and size inclusivity than ever before. I had serious FOMO. Here’s FashioNZ’s roundup of a few epic looks from each designer.
I read pretty much every piece of work their contributors put out and it’s quickly become one of my favourite online media sources. This piece of work by Alexa Grace explains realising that she’s not completely straight, while in a very straight marriage. It’s impressive and explains feeling like a fraud in the LGBTQI+ community. I loved reading it and I encourage you to go support Salty if you can, they’re doing epic things!

I am vibing with Orville Peck’s music right now. I’ll be heading along to his live show at The Powerstation in Auckland this July and I cannot.freaking.wait. I need to find some cowgirl boots ASAP. If you love deep, baritone, southern style music then go check him out!
I also listened to this episode by The Daily: it covers thoughts/feelings regarding racism around mass shootings - a particularly important discussion in general and not just because of the recent (yet again) hate crime shooting at Tops Friendly Market in Buffalo. I’ve added a link to the episode below:
Thank you so much for reading and I hope you found an interesting recommendation, something new to binge-watch or listen to. Watching TV, listening to podcasts, playing games and reading media online are all part of self-care for me. So if I’m helping you with self-care. Then that makes me happy!
Mā te wā (see you later) 👋 Feel free to sign up, like, share, comment or subscribe if you want to support me a little further. Every little comment and share helps me get this out to others who might enjoy it (and those options are free). Yay!
