NZFW 23 Kahuria Show notes: Campbell Luke
So many memorable moments from such a thought-provoking showcase.
Who: Campbell Luke
What went down: An exquisite showcase weaving Māori excellence, stunning garments, accessories, and woven mats, accompanied by a thought-provoking video and a Kapa Haka performance as the soundtrack.
Highlight: I find it fascinating when designers combine textures and layers in unique ways that I wouldn't have thought of. The art of layering transparent fabrics over thicker and more voluminous layers, along with knitwear, is truly impressive. I could have spent the whole day watching those models walk the runway!
One of the memorable moments was watching a model with fully silver hair walking on the runway. As someone proudly wearing their grey hair, I felt so much joy seeing this.
The beauty looks: Soft side sections of hair were plaited gently pulled back into a low updo. I loved the relaxed look of the hair and makeup for this show which paired beautifully with the garments, without overshadowing of course.
Random thoughts: How will anyone else top the beauty I’ve just witnessed? I need one of those structured white blouses AND I have never wanted one of those sheer ‘bib/aprons’ more than RIGHT NOW.
What I wore: A black Mane Project dress, with Dr Martens and a navy vintage blazer. I took along my chocolate brown leather Coach bag.
3 words to describe the show: Emotional. Heavy but also somehow light? I know that’s technically not 3 words, but this was hard to pin down!
Catwalk soundtrack vibe: A gorgeous live performance by a Kapa Haka group which proved to create a powerful energy in the room.
Fragrance I wore: My custom earthy, woody blend that I made via Perfume Playground. Utterly obsessed with DIY perfumes now, don’t come for me. I know how pretentious that sounds.
If I could apply a scent to this catwalk moment: Foggy, cold, crisp air with the smell of sweet, freshly cut grass.
