Movies on Planes, Current Reads & Beyonce: Issue 61
Maybe I only write Substack newsletters from airports now?
My name is Charlotte, and I write like I speak. Friends often ask me for recommendations on books, films, and podcasts, so I created Grab a Slice to share suggestions and help others discover new favourites.
Maybe the way to push myself, to carve out time to write maybe the key is to sit in airports?
This is coming to you from Melbourne International Terminal. I’m using the surprisingly strong airport WiFi to resolve this issue.
I’m in such a fun life season at the moment, I have so many questions to research, and I have an abundance of thoughts, plenty of feelings and a handful of epiphanies happening at any one time. I’m reading books, listening to podcasts, and reading articles online. I have this hunger for dissecting everything to gain a deeper understanding. I think I know where it’s come from, I’ve been writing/journaling a lot, as well as going through therapy and I swear it’s like scraping the gunk off a dirty surface, everything is coming to the TOP and I have many QUESTIONS about life and the universe.
Love this for me.
Anyway, enjoy the following ramblings of things I’ve been absorbing lately!
Is it too soon to say I love this TV series from 2019, called Evil? I’ve only seen the first two episodes so far, and can’t believe I somehow missed this when it first came out. I love the main character, played by Katja Herbers - she’s fantastic! Go find it on TVNZ!
I also watched Dirty Little Letters on the plane ride over to Australia and omg I loveddddd it. It’s based on a true story, and I had a few friends mention how brilliantly funny this film was when it first came out - and I wasn’t let down. Now all I want to do is break out my letter-writing kit (yes I have one) and start sending letters - not rude ones like Edith though!
I’m reading about four different books right now, that’s what happens when I can’t get my Amazon Kindle to work properly and ask Logan to help me put some books on it, he goes above and beyond and puts like 10 on there for me. But it’s fine because I need certain books for certain moods. Themes for times of the day and how tired or energised I’m feeling - you know what I mean?
Currently reading:
All About Love by Bell Hooks
Chaos: The Truth Behind the Manson Murders by Tom O’Neill
101 Essays That Will Change the Way You Think by Brianna Wiest
The Lonely City by Olivia Laing
Unsure if I would recommend any of them just yet because I haven’t finished or let the book info sink into the brain juices. So read them if you like, and if you’re not keen, you don’t have to!
Did I mention that I recently deep-dove all the Beyonce albums from start to finish (chronologically) and have come to a few conclusions?
Beyonce is one of the few female artists who I have a 100% admiration for… and that’s saying something. I love music, I have an eclectic taste spanning GENRES. When I tell you that few people on this planet have me bound and gagged with their art - I’m talking about Beyonce. (Also Lana Del Rey, but we’ll chat Lana later). If you are reading this right now… have you listened, and I mean LISTENED to Cowboy Carter? Because when I tell you that Beyonce’s storytelling is on another LEVEL, I mean it. The poetry, the vulnerability, the stories, the history, and the personality that evolves from start to finish. I can’t. I can’t do it anymore. She’s TOO good.
We’re in September! And you know what that means, it’s a new month so you get a new playlist curated by me, for me, because I like everything on this list for one reason or another. Go play it, save it, listen to it on a cute walk and think of me!
Remember to subscribe if you haven’t already (grab the free version), share this with a friend and have a lovely rest of your week!
