Inventing Anna, Uncut Gems, & The Batman: Issue 15
I'm exhausted. Is anyone else just plain exhausted? Anyone at all?
Okay, so firstly hello
Secondly, no there was no Issue last week, I had 3 days to cram 5 days’ worth of work before setting off on an adventure to Otago to see my mother dearest. I needed a mini holiday and had every intention of writing this, and then just didn’t!
This means I have a juicy issue this week for you. So now that my awkward intro is over, let’s get into it!
This week I’m watching, reading and listening too…
〰️ WATCHING 〰️
I love that some of you guys actually PM me on my social accounts or chat to me in real life now about “things that you think should be included in this newsletter". Now, I know it’s ‘old’ - but it’s still funny, and I actually started writing this episode last week when this all happened but HOW ridiculously funny was Julia Fox’s interview and the whole ‘Uncut Gems’ thing? Honestly, the power and ferocity of the internet still blows my mind sometimes.
For those who didn’t hear, Julia mentioned how she was a muse in the film Uncut Gems… and the way she annunciated the Uncut ‘GEMS’ made it sound more akin to ‘Uncuh Jams’ and with that, TikTok went wild. I wrote down all the ways I could say/spell it.
Uncah Jams
Uncut Geums
Uncut Jahms
Uncut Gams
Uncut Nams
Uncut Jaams
Next up, is Inventing Anna on Netflix - I binged it and loved it. Although Julia Garner’s accent really grated on me. I then went down a fraud infested rabbit hole of Youtube videos about the REAL Anna (thanks for sharing this with me Ava!).
If you’re a fan of 80’s classic slasher films then you MUST watch the latest Chainsaw Massacre film on Netflix. I didn’t hate it, but I didn’t love it. There were some fun bits, some ‘edge of your seat’ bits and some just plain ‘over the top’ gore bits (hello, bus interior scene).
I ALSO got invited to watch The Batman premiere on Tuesday night (out in cinemas now). I’m a huge Gotham/Batman/Gotham Villan fan girl so you can bet your bottom dollar that this film was on my ‘don’t fucking miss it’ list. IT WAS INSANELY GOOD. Robert Pattinson as Batman ✔️ Zoey Kravitz as Selina Kyle ✔️ Paul Dano as Riddler ✔️. I could go on, but no spoilers. Just go see it!
And to finish all this off, we ALL know Lizzo is a mood, a vibe, a fucking bad bitch and she’s starring in her own reality TV show! The eight-episode series ‘Watch Out for the Big Grrrls’ premieres on Amazon Prime Video on March 25. One of my besties Jaimee messaged me and was like THIS MUST BE IN HERE!

〰️ READING 〰️
Ya’ll know I love fashion, and this was a great read all about micro-trends from the Ensemble team - Interesting fact: “The typical lifespan of a fashion trend is 5-10 years, while the fashion cycle of a micro-trend is usually 3-5 years”. Go take a read and let me know what your favourite ‘trend’ is whether it’s a long-time trend or a micro trend.
*Trigger warning, Abortion* I was reading a really insightful piece of work by Andrea Zelinski on the current state of abortion laws in the US and the fact that many women are having to take the time to travel across states in America in order to get the medical attention they need. It’s been dubbed ‘Abortion Tourism’.
It’s quite sad, but also a real eye-opener into the politics around bodies. Only read it if you have the emotional capacity right now xxx
I wrote a little piece recently for FashioNZ about iconic sunglasses of history and it was SO much fun picking *some* of my favourites. It got me thinking about how much a stellar pair of sunglasses really do complete an outfit. Do you have a favourite pair of sunnies?
As someone who is currently sporting a lot of naturally silver hair, this Reddit thread made me so sad and angry for this gal. Basically, her boss told her to dye her hair (over her natural grey/silver hair) to “maintain hygiene and look more professional”. I know right? WTF? Reading this thread might make you angry, but it was so honest and the comments range from pure outrage to completely gorgeous. Go check it out.
〰️ LISTENING 〰️
It’s a brand new month and you know what that means ~ you get access to my public playlist of whatever I’m vibing with. Updated almost daily.
Also… shameless plug as per but my fabulous cost-host Jaimee and I JUST released the first episode of Season 6 for Suspicious or Delicious podcast. This season we’re diving into extinct and endangered foods *oooooooh* - head to the link to listen.
Also, thought I would share this episode of 7 AM which is about Joe Rogan and Spotify. If you don’t know much about Joe Rogan, firstly, I’m totally okay with that because I’m not a huge fan. But secondly, go type his name into Google and you’re bound to find recent articles about him. He’s got a HUGELY popular podcast, yet seems to continuously spread and voice information that doesn’t seem to go down well. I think people have been trying to *cancel* him for a while, including other artists who no longer what his content on platforms like Spotify. Anyways, this could literally be a novel, so I’m not going to bang on about it, but it is an interesting topic to follow.
That brings us to the end of Grab a Slice for another week, I hope you found something intriguing - I do like to try and share a bit of this and a bit of that but at the end of the day, this newsletter will always be random every week, and I kinda like that!
Hope you’re doing okay, things are a bit grim right now so please reach out if you need to chat about anything.
Love you, chat next week and thanks heaps for subscribing and sharing this with people who might like it!
Mā te wā (See you later)
