Dr Death, Online Shaming & Meme Accounts: Issue 23
This week I’ve been going HAM on the podcasts just FYI
Kia ora everyone, Kei te pēhea koe? (Hello, how are you?)
I’m beyond jazzed to tell you, that this issue is late and it’s late because I’m tired. That’s all. Nothing too elaborate or embellished, just tiredness. Let’s get into it, my friends.
This week I’m watching, reading and listening too…
It’s not often that a TV show or film, or podcast will make me feel… distressed. Blame it on watching scary films from a young age or whatever, but I’m desensitised to FUCK! I don’t think it’s a good thing. I listened to the Dr Death podcast a few years back when it first came out, it was always being advertised and well, marketing won. I listened and I was horrified. So when Dr Death the tv show came out on TVNZ on Demand (last year I believe) I waited, and started watching last week. It’s very hard to watch. I genuinely felt quite sickened and distressed during each episode and Joshua Jackson (holy shit his wife in real life is so hot) did us dirty with his smugness. I know this sounds like I’m not endorsing it, but I am. It’s just creepy AF if the idea of REALLY botched surgery and waking up worse than when you went in for surgery freaks you out.
Question before the next section: Are you guys excited for the next season of Stranger Things!? I’m already cancelling that weekend’s plans while getting my blanket and snacks ready I’m not even kidding…
Grab a Slice is FREE to read but if you did want to subscribe for $5 a month to show your support (and get bonus stuff) then go for it.
P.S. If you can't afford to subscribe, that’s okay – I don't want money to be a barrier to entry and this particular newsletter will always be available for free regardless 😊
Ahhh memes. They’re a world of their own. If there is something you’re vaguely interested in, there will be a chaotic meme account dedicated to making you feel seen. But it gets even better…
“What is most special about these specific meme spaces is how open they are to creators from marginalized groups. Many meme-makers reside all around the world and are nonwhite, members of the LGBTQ community, or disabled. Mina noted that many of her friends and followers are trans and nonbinary…”
I love a good meme and follow a few funny accounts - I love Libra horoscope based memes!
Question time: Do you add ‘lol’ to the end of messages to friends/family? Like, ‘going to be late lol’. I definitely do and I’ve realised that ‘lol’ is literally grammar and acts kind of like a punctuation mark. I read a paywalled article which I cant find anymore, and now I can’t share it with you because it might not open for you.. ugh. But it really opened my eyes to the different ways I add ‘lol’ into sentences now, which isn’t always me ‘laughing out loud’. Let me know your thoughts on this!
I enjoyed reading this New Yorker article about online shaming - it mentions Justine Sacco and that incident where she said something stupidly racist online in a tweet, jumped on a long flight and landed to find she had been cancelled worldwide.
It’s MAY! This means, a new playlist - curated to my mood and updated almost daily! Linked below:
I’m currently listening to Scamfluencers, a deep dive into what happens when you’ll do anything for money, fame and at what cost. I started with their first ep which is all about Ballet’s Lethal Startup, they called it the Fyre Fest of the Ballet world… it’s a two-part series and you can listen on Spotify at the show link below:
My podcast host Jaimee and I finished out the latest season all about Extinct and Endangered foods - the last two episodes will be out soon, so go catch up before the next season begins! Show link is below:
Another podcast, I’m really on a roll! I’m slowly getting through The Stalker Files. I started with the first one they created, all about Madonna’s dangerous stalker in 1995. Episode linked below:
That’s it for what I’m reading, listening to and watching this weeeeeek! Thank you so much to my paid subscribers, I love you! See you in the next chaotic issue xxx
Mā te wā (see you later) and please sign up, like, share, comment or subscribe if want to support me a little further. Every little comment and share helps to get this out to others who might enjoy it (and those options are free). Yay!
