Confidence Culture, Emily in Paris & Experimental Pop Music: | Issue 10
Welcome to the jungle, I mean, 2022.
OH heeeeeey everyone,
Firstly, what the hell at it being nearly February, and secondly how the heck are you? It’s 2022, it’s a new year, it’s my first Grab A Slice newsletter of the year - all the good stuff!
Anyways, I would genuinely love to know how you’re doing so hit reply, or slide into my DM’s on Instagram or something. Keen to ‘catch up’ with you!
Anyways, let’s get into it.
〰️ I’ve been reading…
Remember how I mentioned I wanted to read more over my summer holiday? Well, it kinda happened. But not really. So I’m making it up for it now that I’m back at work and trying to set a new routine where I read for a little bit each night to ‘wind down’ in the evening. I’ll let you know how that goes…
This Vox article Is Confidence A Cult? was a good read, and raised some questions around toxic positivity, confidence culture and all those self-help books you might have on your shelf at home.
〰️ I’ve been listening to…
I really enjoy listening to the 7AM podcast, and the mini-episodes by ‘The Culture’ within it. Anyway, they recently brought out a breakdown of their favourite films of 2021 and I was very surprised to learn of a couple I hadn’t seen yet! Stay tuned for my thoughts on Drive My Car and The Power of the Dog.
Over my summer holiday, Logan’s sister introduced me to some new music that I love - Self Esteems 2021 album ‘Prioritise Pleasure’ is such a fun, experimental pop album and the lyrics are SO GOOD!
I was recently listening to this podcast episode by Code Switch which was all about Tupac Shakur. If you’re a fan of him and his legacy you should go listen. He was an eccentric, deep-thinking kinda guy and I’ve always been intrigued by his charismatic personality and of course - his music.
〰️ I’ve been watching…
I recently saw Wes Anderson’s new whimsical film The French Dispatch and as per, it was very… Wes Andersony? A huge cast, loads of classic characters you’ll recognize from previous films of his and I really liked it. If you like Wes Anderson looking architecture then go follow @accidentlywesanderson on Instagram. That account has no idea how much joy it truly brings me.
This podcast episode is a great breakdown of the film which I enjoyed.
My partner Logan and I recently watched the extended versions of all three Lord of the Rings films because we hadn’t seen the longer uncut films… yes you read that correctly… (9+ hours of film all up). There were so many scenes that made so much sense to the overall story, which I hadn’t seen or understood as well when I first watched them. Highly recommend watching the extended cuts if you have the patience.
Now, all I want to do is an elven style photoshoot where I’m bathed in moonlight with Enya softly playing in the background like Arwen.
I also recently finished Emily in Paris (Season 1 and 2) - honestly don’t ask why other than fashion, Paris and escapism. The actual dialogue I tried to ignore because good god, what a load of crap. The best thing about this TV show was the oversized blazer she made into a stylish outfit, borrowed from the hot British guy at the end of Season 2.
What else am I watching? Not a lot as I’ve been workingggggg, but I have started Season 2 of Cheer' on Netflix. I really got into Season 1 and I honestly felt shook when I found out about Jerry in the media, he was so loveable… and Ewww. I’ve saved the rest for a rainy day!
That’s all for this week and I hope you enjoyed my ramblings, please show your support by subscribing to this newsletter for free at the button below, thank you so much for reading!
Mā te wā (See you later)
